James P. McCarthy
James P. McCarthy received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting from the University of Notre Dame in 1981 and his law degree from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago in 1984.
After admission to the Illinois bar, Mr. McCarthy practiced as a trial lawyer with various Chicago insurance defense firms concentrating in personal injury, insurance coverage, product liability, subrogation, and toxic tort litigation. As a founding partner in Gunty & McCarthy, Mr. McCarthy concentrates his practice in the litigation of complex coverage matters, toxic tort, pharmaceutical and medical device, product liability, transportation losses, catastrophic personal injury defense and commercial litigation.
Mr. McCarthy has extensive courtroom experience throughout Illinois and in many federal courts throughout the country. Mr. McCarthy is a member of the Illinois State Bar, The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and other federal bars, and has been admitted to numerous other jurisdictions pro hac vice.
Mr. McCarthy has been involved in several class actions, including suits involving HIV tainted blood products, defective pacemakers and pacing leads. Mr. McCarthy played a leading role in resolving the "In Re Cordis MDL Litigation" which was pending in the federal district court in Ohio and in various other jurisdictions around the country.
Mr. McCarthy speaks frequently at industry-related seminars and is a member of the Defense Research Institute, the Casualty Adjusters Association of Chicago, the Western Loss Association and the Illinois Self-Insureds Association. Mr. McCarthy is an officer of the Blue Goose International Chicago Pond, and served as its Most Loyal Gander in 1998. He is also a member of the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the DuPage County Bar Association.
Additionally, Mr. McCarthy has been active in state and local politics, having served as legislative advisor to a former state representative for six years, as a Republican committeeman for several years, and as chairman of the Political Action Committee of the DuPage County Young Republicans. He has frequent contact with state legislators, congressmen, local officials and lobbyists and has been a vocal advocate of the tort reform movement in Illinois.
Mr. McCarthy has been involved in civic and charitable activities, having served as a founding board member of Cancervive Illinois, as a director of the DuPage County Crime Commission, as an active member of the Elks, and as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician.
