Judicial Hellhole Rankings

The 2019-2020 Judicial Hellholes rankings have been released. St. Louis City, MO and Cook, Madison & St. Clair Counties, IL all made the top ten in the nation. Coming in 5th behind Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, California, New York City & Louisiana, is the City of St. Louis, Missouri.  Though down one place from last year, St. Louis still ranks 5th due primarily to the permitting of forum shopping as well as allowing junk science into the courtroom.  Though modest litigation reforms were enacted in Missouri last year, much more work needs to be done.  Cook, Madison & St. Clair Counties all tied for 7th place which is one spot up from last year.  These counties have become famous for no-injury class action lawsuits and in particular frivolous lawsuits to proceed under the state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act.  Last year, Cook County had avoided being included in the main list but has regained a spot in the top 10 as one of the most plaintiff friendly jurisdictions alongside Madison & St. Clair Counties.
