STEPHEN K. MILOTT is responsible for the trial of asbestos and wrongful death matters on behalf of Gunty & McCarthy clients throughout the United States and in multi-district federal litigation. He has most recently tried a wrongful death case against a plaintiffs’ twelve-million dollar demand. Even though defendant admitted liability, the jury verdict resulted in only a one-million dollar award.
Mr. Milott has been in private practice for over 25 years and has brought hundreds of cases to verdict and judgment in numerous state and federal venues. His extensive courtroom experience includes trials throughout various counties in Illinois, Indiana and Federal District Courts, in both criminal and civil matters. In addition to the Illinois and Indiana State Bars, Mr. Milott is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois where he is a member of the Federal Trial Bar. He is admitted to and has argued before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and is also licensed before the Southern District of Illinois and the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. Milott has practiced in numerous jurisdictions, pro hac vice, and has been a member of the asbestos litigation defense group in several states, as well.
He received his Juris Doctor degree from Chicago’s John Marshall Law School in 1977, graduating in the top 1% of his class and receiving the West Publishing Company Award for Scholastic Achievement. His honors included invitation to membership in the School’s Journal of Practice and Procedure, John Marshall’s prestigious law review periodical.
Mr. Milott is a former Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney, with appointment as a Special Assistant United States Attorney. He has also served as a Special Assistant Illinois Attorney General. He has successfully completed both the standard and advanced courses of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy and has participated in post-graduate classes with the Institute. As an Assistant States Attorney, Mr. Milott was also enrolled in special seminars regarding perpetration of insurance and financial fraud and successfully completed the investigation and prosecution of numerous arson-for-profit and organized crime cases.
Mr. Milott has reported decisions in both state and federal digests and has presided as a Moot Court Judge at several area law schools. He has been a member of the National Association of District Attorneys and past member of the American Bar, the Illinois State Bar and the Chicago Bar Associations. He specializes in the trial of complex toxic tort and general negligence cases which result in death or serious injury, as a senior member of the firm.
